Keeping Your Hardwood Floors Beautiful!
Hardwood floors are a beautiful addition to any home. They require regular cleaning to keep them looking their best. Here are some tips and steps to help you clean your hardwood floors:
Gather the necessary supplies:
- A vacuum cleaner with a soft brush attachment
- A microfiber dry mop and/or damp mop system
- A spray bottle and microfiber cloth (for spot cleaning)
- A hardwood floor cleaner is recommended by your local FloorPros Affiliate. (HINT: in a pinch, you can whip up a homemade solution of water and vinegar)
Sweep or vacuum the floor:
There is no factor more important to the upkeep of your finished hardwood floor. Then the careful and continuous removal of dry and damaging debris on your floor. Vacuuming these off of the floor so that they can’t scratch it is an almost daily imperative. This is especially important in homes where there are kids and pets. Both are known to track in grit that can scratch, dull, or damage the floor finish. Start by removing any loose dirt, dust, or debris from the floor. Use a vacuum cleaner fitted with a soft brush to prevent scratching the wood surface. Brooms are not recommended because they just push grit and other debris across the floor. Pay extra attention to areas near entrances, as they tend to accumulate more dirt.
Spot clean any stains:
If you notice any stains or spills on the hardwood floor. tackle them before proceeding with the general cleaning. This helps to keep you from spreading localized spills and soils over a larger area. Use a clean microfiber cloth or paper towel to gently blot the stain. Avoid rubbing it, it may spread the stain further. We recommend the use of residue-free cleaners, like Synergy Americas’ Capture. This product is pH neutral, highly concentrated, and residue-free. If necessary to fulfill your new floor warranty, use a hardwood floor cleaner. They are designed to remove stains and follow manufacturers' instructions.
Prepare the cleaning solution:
In a bucketless microfiber mopping system, like Synergy Americas’ Rocker Mop. Fill the cartridge with water plus ½ oz of Synergy Capture of in a pinch. Fill a bucket with warm water. Add the amount of hardwood floor cleaner or a mixture of equal parts water and vinegar).
Mopping the floor:
When cleaning hardwood floors, it's important not to use too much water. Excess water can harm the wood. To clean, use a figure-eight motion. Starting from the far corners and moving towards the door where it's dirtier. If the floor isn't dry in 2-3 minutes, you're using too much water. Be careful!
Dip the mop or microfiber cloth into the cleaning solution and wring out any excess water. Begin mopping the floor, working in small sections at a time, and following the grain of the wood. Avoid using excessive water to prevent the floor from becoming too wet. If using a microfiber mop or cloth, periodically rinse it to remove dirt and grime buildup.
Drying the floor:
After mopping, it's essential to dry the floor to prevent water damage and to restore its shine. You can use a clean, dry microfiber cloth or a towel to gently wipe off any remaining moisture. Ensure the floor is completely dry before allowing any foot traffic.
Some Options for Protecting Your Floors:
You can apply a wood floor polish or wax. If desired, you can apply a wood floor polish or wax to enhance the natural shine. It would protect the hardwood surface. Follow the instructions provided by the manufacturer. As different products may have specific application methods. If you decide to go this route, be sure the floor is extremely clean before adding any new coating over the top.
Tips:
- Use microfiber. This material reduces the need for excessive water and detergent.
- NEVER use excessive water or harsh chemicals on your hardwood floors. They can cause damage or discoloration over time.
- Vacuum often, even when you don’t have time to mop
- Place doormats at entrances. Encourage family members to wipe their feet before walking over your hardwood floors.
